How planning applications work in Australia

Each state and territory uses a different name and process for planning approvals. Whether it's a DA, planning permit, or development permit — Planning Alerts tracks them all.

What is a planning application?

A planning application (also called a Development Application, planning permit, or development permit) is a formal request to a local council or government authority to approve a proposed development or land use change. Common applications include new homes and extensions, multi-unit developments, commercial buildings, subdivisions, demolitions, and change of business use.

Once an application is lodged it becomes public record, and neighbours have a right to be notified and submit an objection or support. Planning Alerts monitors published applications across participating councils and sends you a free email alert when something new appears near your address.
